Wheels N Waves : The Best Place To Rent or Buy and then Ride a Bike In Southern Maine

Sure, Wheels N Waves rents e-bikes, sells road and mountain bikes, and has a team of experienced technicians who can handle nearly any service — all at unbeatable prices. But what truly sets our shop apart is its incredible location, offering top-tier access to nearly all the major attractions in the area. In towns like Wells and Ogunquit, parking can be a real challenge, especially on warm summer days when everyone is heading to the beach. So, we ask: instead of driving, why not ride a bike? Both towns are incredibly bike-friendly and easy to explore on two wheels. In this post, we’ll be sharing a few of our favorite bike routes starting right from the shop — perfect for riders of all levels and goals.

In this image, Wheels N Waves is marked by the blue dot in the upper right corner. The first road highlighted in red at the top is Furbish Road, which runs directly alongside the shop. Cyclists looking to reach Wells Beach can simply ride less than a mile down this road and have their choice of several different beach access points (pathways leading from the road to the beach). The other two red-marked roads—Eldridge Road and Mile Road— connect the route parallel to the beach (Ocean Ave, then Webhannet Drive, then Atlantic Ave) back to Route 1, which is outlined in yellow, just like Furbish Road does. This simple network allows riders to explore the entire beach strip freely, without worrying about getting too lost and not being able to get back to their starting point.

Wells Beach (The Jetty) and Ogunquit Beach : The Routes

Typically, when people are in the Wells/Ogunquit area they want to go to the beach in one of two different locations: Wells Beach by the Jetty, or Ogunquit Beach near the public parking area.

For those who are unfamiliar, the Wells Beach Jetty is at the very end of the beach where a tidal river leads into Wells Harbor. The area is easily recognizable by the large wall that extends out into the ocean on either side of the river, and is known for the large amount of space on the beach. Oftentimes, people enjoy watching the boats enter and exit to the right where the harbor entrance is. This area is a four mile ride from the shop, and the route is pictured above in the left image.

To the right is the way that bikers can get to Ogunquit Beach. It is important to note that no matter what combination of back streets are taken, Route 1 will have to be ridden on in some capacity. We mapped out a path that shows Route 1 being taken the entire time-and this is the fastest way to go. From the shop, the large parking lot at the beginning of Ogunquit Beach near the downtown area is 2.8 miles. This area is known for the beautiful sand dunes behind the beach, as well as the Ogunquit River that wraps around the main piece of land and makes for excellent swimming for those seeking calm or warmer waters.

Lastly, we recommend that those who are looking to get some exercise try this four mile scenic loop that starts and ends at the shop! Riders will be taken by Footbridge Beach, which provides an incredibly scenic view of the dunes behind Ogunquit Beach, as well as the river and the opportunity to access the beach. Those who wish to do an abbreviated version of the loop can always exit from the road parallel to the beach (Ocean Ave) at the Bourne Ave intersection. The majority of the Route 1 part of the loop has a sidewalk as well, which makes it a relatively safe option. Please call the shop with any additional questions, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
