Especially in the typically not so warm waters of the Gulf of Maine, a wetsuit is absolutely essential for both surfers just getting into the sport, as well as for dedicated veterans. Those who have surfed for at least a season know that even in the summer, there are many days during which the water isn’t warm enough for more than a quick 15 to 30 minute dip. With this being the case, how could someone possibly paddle out deep into the chilly ocean waters on a surfboard for hours on end in just boardshorts or a bikini? In fact, in many instances going surfing without a wetsuit is not only unpleasant, but dangerous as well. Fortunately, Wheels N Waves has you covered! Stay tuned as we take you through our recommendations and selections so that you know exactly what type of gear will suit your needs.

During warm summer days in July, August, and even September, surfers might not need any insulation, but still need protection from the wind and the sun. For these applications, Wheels N Waves carries a great selection of rashguards for both adults and kids. Rashguards are very effective for UV blockage, and help prevent skin irritation caused by contact with surf wax, especially during long sessions. Their thin material also allows for wearer maneuverability and a comfortable fit, so long as water temperatures are around 68°F and above. And for those who might find a rash guard too thin, Wheels N Waves also carries 1 mm tops—which are a perfect, slightly more insulated option.

When the water temperatures are cool but not necessarily cold, a common choice is to opt for a 3/2 full suit or a 2mm with shorter arm and leg sections. Typically, the thickness of these wetsuits–and wetsuits with greater thickness, for that matter–will be described as 3/2 or 4/3, for example. This simply means that the wetsuit is 2 mm thick in some sections, and 3 mm thick in others. These wetsuits are particularly useful during late spring, summer, and early fall making them a particularly important purchase for Maine surfers and a common go-to option. They are known for their excellent weight to comfort ratio. Oftentimes, even if the water temperature is bearable, having a wetsuit can make a huge difference in a great surf session because it enables you to stay out longer. Yes, we’re the ones selling wetsuits, but even if we didn’t we’d still recommend you get one.

During late fall and early spring, and winter having a full length wetsuit is a must for any surfer who dares to venture out into the frigid waters. Wetsuits that are used during these seasons are typically 4/3, 5/4 and 6/5/4 mm. Due to the dangers that come from low water temperatures in these months–especially for surfers who will be in the water for hours on end–it is extremely important to be outfitted appropriately. Following this, in addition to a wetsuit with enough thickness, it is necessary to also wear boots, gloves, and a hood (if the wetsuit does not come with one built in). Like wetsuits, these accessories come in different sizes and thicknesses. At Wheels N Waves, we carry a large variety of cold weather gear specifically designed to meet the needs of Maine surfers.
