Surfing For Life : How To Stay Committed

As someone who has been a surfer for the better part of 10 years, I can absolutely say that not every day will be perfect – especially as the years pile on. Part of the joy that comes from surfing takes place when a person first learns and masters the basics. Like any other hobby or activity, it can certainly be possible to fall out of love with it – sometimes, the stoke just fades. Experienced surfers sometimes need to find ways to make surfing just as fun and exciting as it was when they first stepped on a board. The good news is there are ways to reignite that original spark. Here are my top three tips for keeping the passion alive:

Teach A Friend To Surf

As a surf instructor at Wheels N Waves, I’ve seen firsthand how rewarding it is to help someone catch their first wave. Humans are wired to share joy, and watching a friend stand up for the first time is a rush all its own. Their excitement will be contagious! Plus, once they’re hooked, you’ve got a new surf buddy. If you’re feeling unenthusiastic, helping out a friend will certainly make you feel better – and paddling out together might be exactly what you need to get your own joy back.

Explore New Surf Spots

Sometimes, all it takes to regain the stoke is a change of scenery. Going surfing at the same place every session can get boring! Road-tripping to a new break can refresh your perspective, challenge your skills, and create lasting memories. Even if one spot doesn’t click, the next one might become your new favorite. Surfing can provide riders with the chance to gain new perspectives, travel, and learn about the self. This tip is sure to remind you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place.

Treat Yourself With An Upgrade

Few things are as effective at getting someone on the water as new gear is. If you’ve outgrown your beginner or intermediate board, moving up can be a game changer and a total morale booster. I recently grabbed a Michael Dolsey funboard from WNW, and it made me feel like a kid again. The first time I took it out, I had one of the best sessions of my summer and I can honestly say it definitely made me want to go out again and again. It’s important to consider that when skills match equipment, it can make all the difference on the world when you’re on the water.
