Hurricane Erin : Our Recommendations

After paddling out this morning to catch the first of Hurricane Erin, I can safely and happily say that the waves have finally arrived! Conditions were good, with a midsized, funboard friendly break that hopefully provides a taste of even greater things to come. The waves were definitely increasing in size, but not did not hold much power quite yet. The climax is expected to come on Saturday, due to the favorable winds and the full onset of everything that the storm has to offer. On Sunday and Monday conditions are supposed to die down a bit. Fortunately, this is followed with waist high waves coming Tuesday and Wednesday due to the wind shifting West. To get ready and maximize your fun on the water, we offer the following tips.

#1

Firstly, grab a short board! Surfboards that are reliable in smaller waves typically won’t serve their riders as well in bigger swells. Being able to duck under waves with your board and make crisp, sharp turns is a requirement. I would recommend anything in the size range of 5′ 0 – 6’8 to ensure the best experience. It is worth noting that moving down to a shortboard can be a big jump, but with a little practice it won’t be a problem – especially if the waves are big enough.

Secondly, to put it simply – surf within your abilities! Bigger waves bring bigger currents and are much harder to navigate. If you’re going out, make sure your swimming abilities are where they need to be. It’s harder for lifeguard to paddle out and help people when the waves are so big. This isn’t just a normal day with above average waves we’re talking about here – this is Hurricane Erin! Never underestimate how tiring a paddle out will be. Lastly – have fun! Hurricane season comes once a year, so enjoy it. Let’s not take this opportunity for granted. Southern Maine is being blessed, so let’s get out, shred it up and put this one in the memory books!
